There are no definitive answers. Quite the opposite, there are countless possible replies. As wide ranging as Australia’s boundless plains. As colourful and varied as the diverse mix of people who live in this country. Indigenous, convict descendants, old European stock and recent migrants from Asia, Africa and the Middle East will voice different views, from resounding endorsement to condemnation to somewhere in between.
Once the political heat has been taken out of the discussion, we can look at Australia Day as a chance to emphasise harmonious co-existence, to talk about the values that unite us and how to overcome barriers that divide us.
